The Workhorse of Sputtering Systems Deserves a Great Horseshoe.

DHF Technical Products Gold Upsilon Sputtering Target

Look closely and you’ll see the hint of a horseshoe in this Gold Upsilon Sputtering Target designed and manufactured by DHF Technical Products.

Sputtering Systems from MRC and the Upsilon Target Continue to Do the Heavy Lifting for Leading Companies and Institutions.

People say the Gold Upsilon Sputtering Target from DHF Technical Products looks like a lot of things: A picture frame. A box. A rectangle. But if you look closely, you can also see part of a horseshoe. Which makes sense because the Upsilon Target has been essential in helping the workhorse of sputtering systems from MRC run beautifully for decades.

Sputtering Systems Born to Run and Run and Run.

Materials Research Corporation, known as MRC, has been at the forefront of innovations in sputtering systems and other advanced materials processing technologies since its founding in 1957 by Dr. Sheldon Weinig and Dr. Josef Intrater. The company’s dedication to R&D allowed them to introduce breakthrough systems and technologies for several decades.

Their flagship product was a line of sputtering systems designed to deposit thin films on a variety of surfaces. These sputtering systems quickly earned a reputation for being precise, flexible, efficient and ideal for a number of applications including semiconductor manufacturing, glass coating and solar cell production. MRC also offered a range of sputtering products including advance power supplies, process control systems and components for material deposition techniques. By the 1980s, MRC had become the go-to PVD equipment supplier for the semiconductor industry.

Still Running and Running and Running Today.

Today, with an installed base of tens of thousands, MRC sputtering systems have been an essential piece of equipment in the thin film industry for decades. With a proven track record, flexible design and continued availability of parts and service, these systems are still trusted by leading companies and institutions around the world and remain an important player in the materials processing industry for advanced electronics, renewable energy, scientific research and more.

MRC Sputtering Systems still in use today include the 903 and 943 models, manufactured in 1972 and once considered the workhorse for applications like semiconductor manufacturing and hard coating for cutting tools. Like nearly all the MRC Sputtering Systems, these are incredibly reliable and can be configured for nearly any modern application.

KDF Strengthens the MRC Tradition.

Over the years, MRC has been acquired by companies including Sony in 1989 and Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL) in 1998. KDF acquired the MRC batch and etch product lines, including sputtering systems, from TEL. In early 2022, KDF was acquired by Kurt J. Lesker Company, a leading global provider of high quality vacuum equipment. KDF and Kurt J. Lesker Company continue to service these machines with a full line of parts for the MRC systems, manufactured from the original MRC documentation. They also have a large inventory of replacement parts for these valuable machines and are always working on ways to update the older designs to make them as reliable as possible.
